Environment
Theodore Roosevelt, the father of our National Parks, is a hero of mine. President Roosevelt summed up my own philosophy on conservation when he said, “The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in value. Conservation means development as much as it does protection.”
Growing up in Pequot Lakes, I know first hand the importance of protecting Minnesota’s lakes, rivers, and forests. The economy of our town, and many others across Minnesota, is dependent upon the tourism generated during the summer months as people from all over America head to “the lake.”
I believe we must move beyond the extremes on both sides of the environmental debate and restore some common sense to our environmental policy. Preserving the environment for future generations means that we must wisely manage our land and water.
This means relying on Minnesota renewable energy sources like ethanol, biodiesel, and wind, not just drilling. It means fully funding our conservation programs so we restore wildlife habitat. It means giving people who love the outdoors – hikers and hunters, snowmobilers and sportsmen – fair access to our public lands.
I remain committed to protecting and preserving our natural resources so that future generations of Minnesotans can enjoy the best of our state.
